Are you ready to walk through history? Join us to explore the legendary Sutro Tunnel and discover the enduring remains of the historic mining town of Dayton, Nevada.

While the site is generally closed to the public to ensure its preservation, you can gain exclusive access through our specially curated 2026 programming:

  • Guided Heritage Tours: Take a professionally guided, interpretive walk through the outdoor townsite and tunnel entrance.
  • Special Events: Experience the site through Shakespeare in the Desert, the Haunted Tunnel walks, or our Saturday History Lecture Series.
  • Photography & History Tours: Join limited-capacity sessions designed for an intimate look at our historic artifacts.
  • Group Visits: Schedule tailored experiences for schools, historical societies, and tour operators.

Guided History Tours

Join the Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity for a 2.5-hour Guided History Tour led by passionate historic docents, offered twice each month during our open season.

On these engaging public tours, you will:

 

  • Discover the story and purpose behind the Sutro Tunnel
  • Wander among all 11 historic buildings on the site
  • Get an up-close look at antique mining equipment
  • Visit the Sutro Tunnel Museum & Gift Shop
  • Step inside the newly rebuilt entrance to the Sutro Tunnel

 

Guided History Tours take place on the third Wednesday and third Saturday of each month, from spring through late summer.
