Follow students’ footsteps through the original Victorian era four-storied wooden school building, built to accommodate over 1000 students. Sit in the same wooden desks as they did from 1876 to 1936 in one of the sixteen classrooms that retain original interior finishes, historic maps, books and graffiti. You can explore Virginia City history, Mark Twain's life, letter press printing, alumni’s lives, Comstock mining, abandoned mine issues and new exhibits in the other classrooms. Connect with the importance of education for the immigrant miners and entrepreneurs in the Old West and the real story of life in a booming, cosmopolitan mining town. Ask in the museum store if you can pull the rope to hear the school bell. Rent a room for an event, meeting, conference or catered High Tea. Book a school or group tour. Or schedule a historic presentation.
Open May 1 through October 31, daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Last admission is 4:45 pm. Group tours available year round with advance reservation by calling (775) 847-0975 ext. 1.
